WE DON'T DO THIS
Exhibition design
MO Museum, Vilnius, Lithuania
2024
Around 300 artworks from delicate paper, film, sound, paintings to books compose a myriad of walls - some intentionally full of works on top of another, other times only one piece of work to counterbalance the experience. The exhibits from all three Baltic museums, galleries and private lenders in various medium, make up the exhibition ‘We Don’t Do This’ which displays intimate human relationships from the Soviet era, where sexuality-related content was widely censored. In addition recent research and newly commissioned works are presented that openly discuss about family, gender, queerness and love.
The design proposal was to use paper and cardboard. Although thin, it creates rather stuffy and archival feeling. By consciously allowing the sheets to curl away from the wall, it looks as if these layers are being peeled off. The monolithic spatial blocks begin to reveal more delicate and complex stories under the normative representations of relationships so far. To minimize costs, backing walls were built only where paintings are hung and more robust panels from previous exhibitions could be used with less time spent on 3 coatings of paint that usually takes the toll on budget and time. Walls were dimensioned to minimize trimming paper and allow uniform pattern throughout surfaces. Graphic design was neatly integrated onto the surfaces.
